Character Analysis of Calixta in Kate Chopin’s Short Story “The Storm”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the character of Calixta in Kate Chopin’s “The Storm”. Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” tells the story of a 19th century housewife, Calixta, who appears to be unhappy and restless within her marriage. Upon the arrival of an old flame, Alcee, during the approach of a storm, Calixta begins to feel nervous, warm and excited. Her obvious passions are reciprocated and she and Alcee have an affair that lasts the duration of the storm. The characterization of Calixta takes a surprising turn at this point however as neither Alcee nor Calixta experience guilt or remorse of their affair. Calixta, quite to the contrary is rejuvenated and elated by her new found sexuality and she carries her happiness back into her marriage; a shocking prospect in 19th century characterization of women. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

DOES “SLUT” MAKE ITS POINT?
[ send me this paper ]
For time immemorial, sexual men have been congratulated and patted on the back for their prowess, while sexual women have been called names such as "tramp," "whore" and "slut." Leora Tanenbaum's book "Slut! Growing Up Female with a Bad Reputation" attempts to examine this point yet again by bringing up certain examples -- as well as her own experience -- about how society views the sexual woman. This paper examines how well Tanenbaum has proved her point. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Economic Empowerment and its Relation to Women's Reproductive Choice and Health
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page examination of the contention that "the relationship between women's employment and fertility is 'elusive and ambiguous'". The author speculates that in some situations women's employment might be likely to result in greater sexual and reproductive choice. This contention can be demonstrated with a look at microcredit programs, programs which are designed to give women an economic leg-up in the world of business. Sometimes such programs, however, have unexpected results, results which could serve more as a detriment than as a benefit to women's reproductive choice and health. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Feminism and Gender Roles in the 1950s and 1960s
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page overview of the societal changes which occurred during these two decades in regard to the relationships between men and women. Notes a number of factors combined to effect these changes. These were inclusive of the subservient role of women throughout history, inequalities in the workplace, and the perception of being bound into domesticity. Concludes that to judge the changes in gender roles which occurred during the 1960s is the same as judging any facet of human evolution. The relationship between men and women is no more static than any other aspect of our culture and society. Women had witnessed the breaking down of racial discrimination, and age-old attitudes about sexuality and other barriers, they were ready to implement equal changes in their own lives. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Feminism: Gender Categorization Verses the Concept of Sex
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the traditional feminist distinction between sex and gender. Contends that feminists do not deny the biological facts of their bodies, only society’s tendency to lump them into certain societal categories because of their bodies. With the advent of the societal movement we now refer to as feminism, there were dramatic changes in gender roles, the societal expectations for women as opposed to men. While there were changes, however, these changes were not without their problems. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Fictional Portrayals of Women: William Faulkner Contrasted with Margaret Atwood
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page comparison of the portrayals of women found in William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" and Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale". Observes that the characterization of women in "As I Lay Dying" differs significantly from that in "The Handmaid's Tale". While the women in Faulkner's book are presented as simpletons and immoral, Atwood's women are presented as highly intelligent despite the societal prohibitions for being so and highly moral despite the forced circumstances of their lives. Both portrayals, however, are replete with stereotypical representations of women. In "The Handmaid's Tale", however, we are reassured that women are not shallow, not by nature promiscuous, despite the societal circumstances in which they may be forced to live.
